Hebrews was written to Jewish believers before the destruction of Jerusalem to encourage them to remain faithful in spite of persecution for their faith in Christ. The epistle highlights the superiority of the New Covenant to the Old Covenant that was vanishing away and becoming obsolete. Some Hebrew believers were departing the church and returning to the Old Covenant system that was about to be judged and destroyed. The Hebrews were encouraged to be remain faithful and steadfast unto the coming of the Lord which was at hand.
